The Navigator

The Navigator is your main tool to navigate and operate on files and folders. You can open the Navigator by selecting Window→Show Navigator from the main menu.

The Navigator window

Navigator

The Navigator can also be used to browse and download files from ArcGIS online or on-premise Portals for ArcGIS. There are four different types of content available: Local Files, My content, Groups, and All public items.

My content, Groups, and All public items are Portal items and only become active when you sign in to Online or Portal.

  Local files

The Navigator shows files and folders of the current Workspace on your computer. You can open and edit CityEngine CGA and scene files by double-clicking the corresponding file in the Navigator. The Navigator provides also basic operations such as copying, renaming and deleting files and folders.

Note that you can copy-paste or drag-and-drop files from the operating systems' file explorer directly into CityEngine's Navigator.

If you modify files in the workspace outside of CityEngine (e.g. by editing a file using the operating systems' file explorer or an external program), you have to refresh the Navigator. Choose File→Refresh Workspace or simply hit F5.

 My content

My Content shows all content you have added to the signed-in portal. This content is visible only to you.

  Groups

Groups lets you access the list of groups to which you belong, and all the items shared with those groups.

  All public items

All public items provides access to content from My Content, Groups, and all content that is shared with your organization or public.

Search for files

You can search for local files in the Navigator by entering text in the search box. Only files and folders which contain the entered text in their name will be displayed. If you want to display only files of a certain type select one of the types in the drop-down list on the right of the search box.

Searching local files in Navigator

You can also search Online or Portal for content. For example, you can take advantage of resources from the CityEngine community and download rule packages shared to Online or Portal created by other CityEngine users.

Preview Files

The Navigator can preview selected files. Right-click or double-click the selected file to preview the file.

Asset Preview

The Navigator with the preview of a selected image file

In the case of a 3D model such as .dae (Collada) or .obj files, a 3D preview is available which can be tumbled/navigated/framed as in the 3D Viewport windows. Also a limited set of the 3D Viewport's display option is available such as shaded, textured, or wireframe.

3D object preview

Previewing a selected 3D file

In the case of selecting CGA rule files, a preview of the 3D model is generated. Therefore, the Navigator scans the CGA rule file and guesses its start rule and applies the latter on a default shape. You can click the Choose Start Rule button to set the start rule. Then click the Select initial shape button to apply it to a shape. Similar to the 3D object view, the resulting 3D model can be tumbled/navigated/framed as in the 3D Viewport windows.

CGA Rule Preview

Previewing a selected rule file

For the rule file preview, the user can select the start rule (left) and the initial shape where it is applied on (right)

In case another start rule has to be applied, the user can manually select it by clicking on the Choose Start Rule button . Furthermore, the user can modify the default shape where the rules are applied. Therefore, click on the Select initial shape button which presents a set of typical shapes consisting of horizontal planes ("Base*"), vertical planes ("Facade*") and volumes ("Volume*"). These shapes are very practical to preview the behavior of rule files on shapes with regular and irregular geometry.

Drag and Drop from Navigator

Several filetypes can be by simple drag-and-drop into the 3D viewport.

Dragging a CGA rule file onto selected shapes.
